You don’t have to be religious, spiritual or even particularly peaceful to have a meditation practice. You also don’t have to be afraid or embarrassed to have one, either.
Many people are under the false (and a little stupid, quite frankly) assumption that if you meditate, then you go into some trance-like state where you levitate in the air as demons whisper in your ear, guiding you to sin. Those notions and fears have been handed down through the years, by a patriarchal system that wanted to keep people in their place, without freedom of speech, or an awareness of their conscious ability and personal power.
It’s an old, uneducated belief system that surprisingly still has control over a lot of people even today!
Most of those people will condemn holistic practices, including meditation and alternative healing therapies, without ever trying any of them! You can’t change or control who people are, what they do, or what they believe. But you CAN control who YOU are, what you do and what you believe.
So, if you feel a call to sit quietly, to walk in nature, to sing or chant, to dance, to howl, to orgasm, to visualise, to dream, to connect, to create, to cry, to shout, to express yourself, to embody yourself, to meditate in your own way – a way that delights your mind, body and soul – then PLEASE have the courage to do so with passion and without apology.
